INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS

10th & Rural Streetscaping
NEAR is working with the City’s Department of Metropolitan Development and Department of Public Works to coordinate a major redesign of two of the Near Eastside’s primary thoroughfares: 10th Street and Rural Street. This project, slated for construction in 2023-24, will make these major commercial and residential  corridors safer and compelling for both vehicular travel and pedestrian access.

2-Way Conversion of Michigan & New York Streets
Both Michigan (currently westbound only) and New York Streets (currently eastbound only) will each be converted to two-way traffic in 2023, according to the City’s Department of Public Works and IndyGo. The conversion uses a “complete streets” design to make the streets safe for walkers, cyclists, and drivers from College Avenue to Emerson Avenue. NEAR is advising DPW and IndyGo in this conversion.

Pogue’s Run Trail
A long-anticipated completion of the Pogue’s Run Trail is on the horizon. This multi-use path will extend from 10th Street at Brookside Drive, through Spades Park and Brookside Park, and exit the northeast end of the Pogue’s Run Arts & Nature Park on 21st Street. The timetable for this completion is the end of 2023.

IREF/former Indiana Women’s Prison Reuse
NEAR is one of a handful of Near Eastside community-based partners which are advocating together with the State of Indiana for a neighbor-informed, strategic reuse plan for the 12+ acre site with frontage on both Michigan and New York Streets. As a correctional facility has negatively defined nearby neighborhoods for generations, a well-informed plan can positively shape our Near Eastside future.

Sherman Park Reuse
The City of Indianapolis is currently working with an engineering partnership to develop infrastructure planning for the 50-acre brownfield. NEAR coordinates with the City’s DMD to inform and shape this critical space based on the Sherman Park Plan.
